Turkey Reinstates the Name “Turkestan”
World
Turkey has officially begun using the name “Turkestan” to refer to the Central Asian region. The new designation will be included in the country’s school and university textbooks.
According to a number of local historians, the region was not originally known as either “Middle Asia” or “Central Asia.” These terms are considered to have been introduced externally and not reflective of the region’s historical name.
The term “Central Asia” was first conditionally introduced into academic usage by German scholar Alexander von Humboldt in 1843 as part of his research.
