Türkiye Lifts Restrictions on Syrian Imports
Economy
Türkiye has lifted the ban on Syrian imports. The Turkish Ministry of Trade has authorized the import of Syrian goods and products. This was announced by Mazen Alloush, head of the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports.
"A decision was made during a meeting between the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports and the Turkish Ministry of Trade to lift restrictions on the export of Syrian goods and food products to the Turkish market," the statement said.
The trade agreement between the two countries was suspended in 2011 when the civil war in Syria began. After opposition forces ousted Bashar Assad in December last year, Türkiye pledged to support the recovery of Syria’s economy.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that the international community must lift sanctions against Syria to help with its reconstruction. "The sanctions imposed on the previous regime must be lifted as soon as possible," Fidan said at a press conference with Syria’s new leader, Ahmad al-Shar’a.
Currently, relations between Türkiye and Syria are rapidly developing after the fall of the Bashar Assad regime on December 8, 2024. Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reaffirmed that his country’s intervention in the Syrian crisis was not only justified but also necessary.
Additionally, EU foreign ministers have agreed on a roadmap for lifting sanctions against Syria. According to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, the European Union is striving to speed up the process of lifting sanctions. However, she warned that if Syria's new government "takes the wrong steps," the decision could be reconsidered.
