The United Kingdom will increase its troop numbers in Norway from about 1,000 to 2,000 as part of NATO’s “Arctic Guardian” operation amid rising tensions in the Arctic.
The United Kingdom has decided to double its military contingent in Norway in response to increased Russian military activity in the Arctic region. The announcement was made by Defense Secretary John Healey during a visit to the British base in Skjold, located north of the Arctic Circle.
According to him, the number of British troops in Norway will grow from around 1,000 to 2,000 personnel. The decision is part of NATO’s “Arctic Guardian” operation.
The Skjold base was opened by the UK in 2023. It is located near the city of Tromsø, in an area close to the borders of Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
In recent years, Russia has been expanding its military presence in the Arctic, which NATO countries view as a potential threat to their interests, prompting countermeasures in the region.
