Ukraine Confirms Halting Russian Gas Transit

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine officially announced that the transit of Russian gas to the European Union was stopped on the morning of January 1.
“In the interest of national security, the transportation of Russian natural gas through Ukrainian territory was halted at 7:00 AM. Ukraine has duly informed its foreign partners about this,” the ministry’s statement reads.
“We have stopped the transit of Russian gas; this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets and will face financial losses,” said Minister Herman Halushchenko through the ministry’s press service. “Europe has already decided to abandon Russian gas. The European Repower EU initiative envisions exactly what Ukraine has accomplished today.”
The transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory was carried out under agreements signed in late 2019, before Russia's large-scale invasion. On New Year’s Eve, the agreements expired, and Ukraine refused to renew them.
