On Sunday, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a surprise attack in Russia's Kursk region. This operation is seen as a strategic move by Ukraine to regain battlefield momentum ahead of Trump’s inauguration. The action in Kursk has once again escalated tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Ukraine Launches Surprise Attack in Russia’s Kursk Region
According to Ukraine’s General Staff, 42 combat clashes occurred in the Kursk region on Sunday, with 12 still ongoing. These clashes are significant because they are taking place inside Russian territory. The actions of Ukrainian forces highlight their strong resistance against the Russian armed forces.

Approximately six months ago, Ukraine carried out a major cross-border raid into Russia’s Kursk region. This marked the first time since World War II that enemy tanks had entered Russian territory, which was viewed as a major embarrassment for the Kremlin. Since then, the Russian army has managed to reclaim 40% of the lost territory but has not succeeded in completely pushing out Ukrainian forces.

Under President Vladimir Putin’s strategic plan, the new U.S. administration might halt military support to Ukraine, potentially enabling Russian forces to achieve new territorial gains by 2025. However, Ukraine is actively working to disrupt this calculation, intensifying its attacks to regain the initiative on the battlefield.

This new phase of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia holds significant strategic importance for both sides. While Ukraine strives to secure dominance on the battlefield, Russia is mobilizing all resources to preserve its territorial integrity.
