"Сhildren account for forty per cent of the deaths in Gaza. This is unprecedented," said Catherine Russell.
In 46 days, 5,300 children have died in the Gaza Strip, which is 115 children a day. This was stated by Catherine Russell, executive director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), at the UN Security Council meeting on the Gaza Strip.
According to Russell, it is not enough to achieve a humanitarian pause in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, it is important to immediately declare a humanitarian ceasefire to stop the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip.
She drew attention to the increase in military activity in southern Gaza and called for its prevention.
Russell noted that the death toll in the current crisis is too high. She said the UN has been recording violations against children for 17 years and the number of children killed during that period totalled 1,653.
"More than 5,300 Palestinian children have been reportedly killed in just 46 days – that is over 115 a day, every day, for weeks and weeks. Based on these figures, children account for forty per cent of the deaths in Gaza. This is unprecedented. In other words, today, the Gaza Strip is the most dangerous place in the world to be a child," she emphasised.
According to Russell, some 1,200 children still remain under the rubble.
Children in the Gaza Strip are facing food shortages, she said.
Russell said that since 7 October, 35 children have died in Israel, 56 in the West Bank and 450,000 children are in need of humanitarian aid there.
For her part, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bacchus said that sect.
