UN General Assembly Adopts Uzbekistan-Initiated Resolution on the Role of Parliaments in Social Development

On 24 July, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution "Strengthening the Role of Parliaments in Accelerating Social Development," an initiative put forward by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The resolution was co-sponsored by 61 UN Member States representing all regions of the world.
Presenting the draft, Ulugbek Lapasov, Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the United Nations, said the initiative reflects the country's contribution to advancing the global social development agenda and strengthening the parliamentary dimension of international cooperation.
The resolution highlights the role of parliaments in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals through stronger legislation, enhanced social protection systems, poverty reduction, the promotion of decent work, expanded access to quality education and greater social inclusion. It also emphasizes increasing the participation of women and young people in parliamentary activities, harnessing digital transformation for social development and expanding international cooperation.
The document welcomes the holding of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tashkent and the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration on Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Social Justice.
It also encourages UN Member States to engage parliaments more actively in implementing and monitoring the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the preparation of Voluntary National Reviews, parliamentary oversight of national commitments, cooperation with civil society and the strengthening of national statistical systems.
