Pedro Arrojo-Agudo has demanded that Israel allow clean drinking water and fuel supplies into the blockaded Gaza Strip as soon as possible.
Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, the UN special rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, has called on Israel not to use water as a weapon of war in the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The UN representative demanded that Israel allow clean drinking water and fuel into the region as soon as possible to activate water networks and desalination plants.
"Every hour that passes with Israel preventing the provision of safe drinking water in the Gaza strip, in brazen breach of international law, puts Gazans at risk of dying of thirst and diseases related to the lack of safe drinking water," Arrojo-Agudo said.
"Israel must stop using water as a weapon of war," he emphasised.
According to the special rapporteur, the water and sanitation crisis primarily affects women and children.
Arrojo-Agudo recalled that, according to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), about 70 per cent of Gazans consume “salinized and contaminated” water.
