Undersea volcanic eruption creates new Japanese island
Experts from the Institute for Earthquake Research at the University of Tokyo reported that a new island with a diameter of about 100 metres appeared as a result of the eruption of an underwater volcano near the Japanese island of Io. About it writes RIA Novosti.

It is noted that the eruption of an underwater volcano on the island of Io was confirmed during aerial observations on 30 October.

According to experts, during the eruption, when the magma hit the ocean waters, there was a phreatomagmatic explosion, as a result of which huge rocks were thrown out from under the water.

"Not far from the eruption site, a new island about 100 metres in diameter was found to have formed. Its surface is covered with volcanic stones, and the bordering water area around it has a greyish-beige tinge," the report said.

Therefore, according to experts, the size of the island may increase as the eruption continues. Io Island is located in the Ogasawara island chain, thousands of kilometres south of Tokyo.
