UNESCO has established World Turkic Languages Day, which will be observed annually on December 15. The decision was adopted at the organization’s General Conference held in Samarkand in November.

The chosen date is symbolic. On December 15, 1893, Danish linguist Wilhelm Thomsen announced the successful decipherment of the Orkhon inscriptions — one of the oldest written monuments of Turkic civilization, confirming the millennia-old history of Turkic languages.

The initiative to establish the international day was put forward by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan, and received support from 21 countries, highlighting the growing global recognition of the Turkic linguistic and cultural heritage.

World Turkic Languages Day aims to strengthen international cooperation in linguistic research, education, and cultural exchange, as well as to promote cultural dialogue and mutual understanding among nations.
