78-year-old Trump could face a 4-year prison sentence on charges of falsifying 34 business records. The trial will take place before he officially assumes the presidency. Trump’s supporters are pushing to delay the trial until after his presidential term ends, that is, four years later.

An American Court May Arrest Trump
Yesterday, January 3, Judge Juan Merchan ruled that the president-elect must appear in court on January 10 regarding a case involving 34 serious crimes. However, he promised that Trump would not be arrested.

Judge Juan Merchan, presiding over Trump’s trial in New York, rejected a motion in November to dismiss the case due to the president-elect’s election victory. According to the judge, Trump is expected to attend the trial either in person or virtually.

Merchan also concluded that the Supreme Court's ruling granting presidents immunity from criminal liability for "official acts" does not apply to the president-elect. The judge wrote: "Therefore, the president-elect cannot use the protections granted to the individual currently holding this office."

In May, Trump was charged with falsifying 34 business records, retaining classified documents after leaving office, and attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Trump described the charges as an "illegal political attack" and "nothing but a scheme" by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat.

Prosecutors in Bragg’s office proposed several options, including delaying sentencing until 2029 when the 78-year-old Trump would leave the White House or guaranteeing a sentence that does not include imprisonment. The court’s decision will be announced on January 10.
