From Ally to Adversary: Marjorie Taylor Greene to Leave Congress
World
U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia has announced that she will leave the House of Representatives on January 5, 2026. She made the announcement in a video message posted on social media, stating that it was time to “start a new path” and that she would no longer tolerate “insults” from President Donald Trump.
Greene’s statement marked the culmination of a sharp dispute over the release of U.S. Justice Department documents relating to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Once one of Trump’s fiercest supporters, Greene sided with Democrats in this instance, advocating for full transparency in the case.
The conflict intensified after Greene accused the Trump administration — and the president personally — of attempting to conceal the materials. Trump responded with criticism, which Greene described as “the last straw.”
Under pressure from Epstein’s victims and several Republicans, Trump shifted his stance and backed the release of the documents. Shortly afterwards, the bill mandating disclosure passed both the House and Senate with overwhelming support.
The sharp divergence in positions led to a cooling of relations between Trump and his former ally. As she exits Congress, Greene accompanies her decision with criticism of the Republican Party’s direction and predictions of losses in the upcoming midterm elections.
