The United States and Iran held their first talks since last year’s escalation in the Omani capital, Muscat. The meeting lasted throughout the day and was conducted in an indirect format, with both sides communicating through Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi.

According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the parties agreed to continue negotiations. The date and location of the next meeting will be determined later with Oman’s mediation.

The main topic of the talks was Iran’s nuclear program. The United States also intended to discuss limits on the range of Iranian ballistic missiles, but Tehran refused to address that issue.

The Iranian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The US side included presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, businessman Jared Kushner, and US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper.

The Muscat talks marked the first contacts between Washington and Tehran since the US and Israel carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June last year, which sharply escalated tensions.
