US blocks UN Security Council demand for humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza
The US vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The draft resolution, submitted by the United Arab Emirates along with more than 80 countries to the UN Security Council, was considered at an extraordinary meeting. The US, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, exercised its veto power in the vote.

It is noted that 13 out of 15 members of the Security Council voted in favour of the resolution. The UK abstained from voting.

The draft resolution calls on the parties to fulfil their obligations under international law, mainly with regard to the protection of civilians. The document also provides for the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners and access to humanitarian aid.
