US Calls Netanyahu and Israel ‘Our Great Ally’
World
The U.S. House of Representatives has criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Gaza conflict. The House intends to counter these actions by introducing sanctions against the court, demanding the cancellation of the arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Galant.
The "Anti-Legitimate Court Act" targets foreign individuals investigating, arresting, detaining, or prosecuting U.S. citizens or citizens of allied nations, including Israel, who are not members of the ICC.
Forty-five Democrats joined 198 Republicans in supporting the bill, with no Republican voting against it.
“America is passing this law because the illegitimate court is attempting to arrest the prime minister of our great ally, Israel,” said Republican Brian Mast, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
This vote by the House of Representatives, one of the first actions since the new Congress was formed last week, highlights strong support for the Israeli government from President-elect Donald Trump’s Republican Party, which now controls both chambers of Congress.
Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune has pledged to swiftly review the bill in the Senate, allowing Trump to sign it into law as soon as he takes office.
The ICC is an international judicial body capable of holding individuals accountable for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and military aggression in member states or against their citizens.
The court emphasized that its decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials was in line with its approach to all cases, based on the prosecutor’s assessment of sufficient evidence and the belief that the warrants could prevent ongoing crimes.
