Joe Biden has signed an executive order that gives the US administration the ability to impose sanctions against Jewish settlers involved in attacks on West Bank residents, the White House said.
The White House statement said that Joe Biden expresses concern about the increasing level of violence in the region, including the actions of radical settlers. This violence threatens peace, security and stability in the West Bank, Israel and the Middle East, and undermines US security and foreign policy interests, the statement said.
An executive order signed by the president will authorise sanctions against those involved in destroying property, spreading terrorist activity, and threatening and abusing civilians forced to flee their homes, the White House said.
According to Politico, citing U.S. officials, U.S. authorities plan to impose sanctions against at least four people involved in arson attacks that killed Palestinian civilians, as well as for attacks on local residents. According to the Financial Times, sanctions against Jewish settlers are also being prepared by the European External Action Service.
