US vetoes another UN Security Council resolution urging Gaza war ceasefire
The initiative on the resolution was proposed by Algeria, and 13 of the 15 members of the Security Council voted in favour of it. Britain, as a permanent member of the Security Council, abstained. This is the third time that the resolution has failed to pass because of the US veto.

US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the adoption of the resolution proposed by Algeria could harm efforts to achieve sustainable peace. She also called the document a fake reality and inconsistent, stressing that the US would not support a resolution that could disrupt diplomatic efforts. It was likely referring to negotiations to release Israeli hostages held by the Hamas terrorist group in the Gaza Strip.

The US also submitted its own draft resolution on the Gaza Strip, calling for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden called on 12 February for a six-week ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
