Zvi Kogan’s car was found 150 km away from Abu Dhabi. Uzbek nationals, allegedly sent by Iran, are suspected of murdering him and fleeing to Turkey. The UAE Prime Minister has vowed to catch the killers.
Zvi Kogan, who was murdered in the UAE in November 2024, was a rabbi at the Chabad branch in Abu Dhabi. UAE government officials confirmed on Sunday in a joint statement from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that they had found Kogan's body, which had been missing since Friday.
Israel’s embassy in Abu Dhabi has been in contact with Kogan’s family, and the statement mentioned that family members living in Israel had also been informed.
The statement described Kogan’s killing as "a despicable antisemitic act of terror" and pledged that Israel would use all available means to bring the killers to justice.
“With great pain, we share that Rabbi Zvi Kogan, Chabad-Lubavitch emissary to Abu Dhabi, was abducted and murdered by terrorists on Friday,” Chabad said in a brief statement on Sunday.
Kogan’s body was found in the UAE city of Al Ain, located 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Abu Dhabi, near the Oman border. It is still unclear if he was killed there or elsewhere, according to former Israeli Druze politician Ayoob Kara in an interview with Reuters in Dubai.
Ynet news reported that Kogan’s car was found abandoned in Al Ain. The report also mentioned, without citing sources, that there were signs of a struggle in the vehicle.
Officials suspect that several Uzbek nationals recruited by Iran assaulted the rabbi and later fled to Turkey.
An unnamed source close to UAE authorities told The Times of Israel that the country was shocked and angry, adding that senior state and religious officials were investigating to identify the killers.
