Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, Shahlo Turdiqulova, has been elected as a member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

She became the sole representative from the CIS and Central Asia in this year’s elections and was recognized as the seventh academician from Uzbekistan to be elected to this prestigious academy in the country’s history.

The President of the World Academy of Sciences, Professor Quarraisha Abdul Karim, congratulated Shahlo Turdiqulova and invited her to the diploma award ceremony. In the recent elections, 74 scientists (50 men and 24 women) were elected, bringing the total number of TWAS academicians to 1,444.

The academic diploma award ceremony is scheduled to take place in early 2025 at the Academy’s headquarters in Trieste, Italy.

Shahlo Turdiqulova is the co-author of the Uzbekistan-China COVID-19 vaccine, the scientist with the highest number of publications with significant impact factors in Uzbekistan, and the only scholar in the country whose articles have been published three times in Nature journal.

In April 2024, she was appointed Vice President of the Academy of Sciences, becoming the first woman in the organization’s 80-year history to hold this position. She is also the founder and head of the scientific school of human genetics and biotechnology at the Advanced Technologies Center.

Shahlo Turdiqulova’s election to the World Academy of Sciences is a significant step in enhancing Uzbekistan’s scientific potential and demonstrating its growing contribution to global science, reports Dunyo News Agency.
