Uzbekistan Evaluates Shadow Economy for the First Time: GDP Increases

For the first time, Uzbekistan has conducted an evaluation of its shadow and informal economy. The results show that the country's GDP in 2023 increased by an additional $10.7 billion, reaching a total of $101.6 billion.
According to the Agency of Statistics, the gross added value created in the informal economy grew by 26 trillion UZS. These figures reflect economic activity in the services, construction, and industrial sectors. An additional 6.7 trillion UZS was assessed in the services sector, 14.3 trillion UZS in construction, and 4.9 trillion UZS in industry.
As a result, Uzbekistan's GDP for 2023 increased by 125.6 trillion UZS, totaling 1,192.2 trillion UZS. The per capita GDP rose by an additional 3.4 million UZS, reaching 32.7 million UZS.
These results reveal the impact of the shadow economy on the country's overall economy and will contribute to improving the quality of services provided by the state statistical agencies.
