Uzbekistan is interested in having its own ships on the Caspian Sea. This was announced by the director of the Center for the Study of Problems of Transport and Logistics Development under the Ministry of Transport of the country Bekzod Kholmatov, the Dunyo Agency reports.
Bekzod Kholmatov noted that the presence of own ships in the Caspian Sea will serve to increase the cargo turnover along the Trans-Caspian route.
"Uzbekistan is also interested in participating in joint shipbuilding projects with Azerbaijan. Tashkent is ready to cooperate with other states in this matter," he said.
According to Kholmatov, Uzbekistan is currently working on the construction of its own terminal in the port of Baku.
Uzbekistan is one of two countries in the world classified as “double locked countries”. This means that in order to access the oceans, it is necessary to cross at least two state borders.
At the same time, the Deputy Minister of Transport stated that Uzbek importers are interested in cooperation with the Baku port and intend to rent a mineral fertilizer terminal for a long time or invest in its creation. Now this issue is being studied, a feasibility study is being carried out.
For reference, in 2022, the volume of export-import traffic from Uzbekistan through the port of Baku amounted to 904 thousand tons, which is 65% more than in 2021. The volume of transportation of food cargoes, including raw sugar, mineral fertilizers and containers, has significantly increased.
