Uzbekistan's purchases of Russian gas surged 2.35 times in Q1 2024

Uzbekistan bought Russian gas worth $360 million in the first quarter of 2024, which is 2.35 times more than in the same period of the previous year. This was reported by the press service of the Statistics Agency under the President of Uzbekistan.
It was previously reported that in 2024, the country planned to increase the volume of natural gas purchased from Russia from 9 million cubic meters to 32 million cubic meters per day. $500 million is planned to be allocated for the preparation of trunk gas pipelines through external debt.
In 2023, under the contract between UzGasTrade and Gazprom for the supply of 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas per year, or up to 9 million cubic meters per day, Uzbekistan began importing gas from Russia for the first time. The price of this contract was about $448 million. It was then reported that the parties began negotiations on medium-term and long-term contracts.
