White House: It’s “Very Risky” for Britain to Deal with China
World
US President Donald Trump said it is “very dangerous” for the United Kingdom to engage with China. He made the remarks during the premiere of a documentary about his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, responding to a question about British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s trip to Beijing.
Starmer became the first British prime minister since 2018 to visit China, aiming to reset bilateral relations. Over 50 UK business leaders accompanied him, with the main goal of expanding opportunities for British entrepreneurs in China, the world’s second-largest economy.
On Thursday, Starmer met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other officials, signing several cooperation agreements. Starmer described the meetings as “very good” and said “real progress” was made, emphasizing that the UK has much to offer China.
Downing Street noted that the White House was aware of Starmer’s visit and its objectives. It was also reported that Trump plans to visit China in April.
Earlier, Trump had warned Canada about the risks of doing business with China following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit, threatening 100% tariffs on Canadian imports if new deals with Beijing are concluded. Trump said that for Canada, such engagements are “even more dangerous.”
