White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt made an official statement in response to the demand by European Parliament member Raphaël Glucksmann to return the Statue of Liberty to France. According to her, Raphaël Glucksmann is "an unknown low-ranking French politician". She also emphasized: "It is only thanks to the United States that the French are not speaking German today, and therefore France should be grateful to America."

According to AFP, Leavitt intended to remind the public of the role the US played in liberating France from Nazi occupation during World War II.

On March 16, Glucksmann, co-chair of the Place Publique party, accused US President Donald Trump and his administration of failing to uphold the values of freedom. As a result, he demanded that the United States return the statue to France.

"We gave it to you as a gift, but it seems that you do not respect it," he stated, addressing Americans.

Glucksmann, who actively supports Ukraine, also criticized Washington for getting closer to Moscow, stating that the US "has decided to side with tyrants." Additionally, he condemned the Trump administration for firing scientists who defended academic freedom.

The Statue of Liberty was designed under the leadership of French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and was gifted to the US to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the War of Independence, in which France supported the American cause.

The 46-meter-high monument was inaugurated in 1886 on Liberty Island in New York. According to AFP, for millions of immigrants waiting for entry clearance to the US on Ellis Island, it became a symbol of hope for a new life.
