Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing it as a move that could weaken Russia’s isolation. He warned that such talks risk creating the illusion of progress without substantive changes in Russia’s policies.

Zelensky Calls Scholz-Putin Call a 'Pandora’s Box'
Zelensky stated that he was informed about Scholz’s intentions beforehand but referred to the call as a "Pandora’s box." During the conversation, Scholz condemned the war and urged Putin to withdraw troops from Ukraine, but neither side shifted its stance.

The Kremlin reiterated demands for recognition of “territorial gains” and Ukraine’s NATO non-alignment. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the talks as “frank” but admitted there was no progress toward consensus.

This call came amidst global political shifts, with Donald Trump’s U.S. election win raising questions about future support for Ukraine and Germany potentially heading toward early elections that could result in a new chancellor.
