At least 18 bodies have been recovered from the Potomac River in Washington during a search and rescue operation following a collision between a Bombardier CRJ700 passenger plane and a Sikorsky H-60 military helicopter. Survivors have been found, according to CBS News, citing a police officer.
According to CNN, the current water temperature in the Potomac River is approximately 1.6°C (34.9°F), and in such cold water, a person’s limbs can become immobile within just three minutes. Under these conditions, the estimated survival time for those who fell into the river ranges from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.
As a result of the accident, airport operations have been suspended. A source at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) told NBC that terrorism has been ruled out as a possible cause of the crash.
The collision between the plane and the helicopter occurred on January 29 at 9:00 PM local time (7:00 AM Tashkent time on January 30) near Washington Airport. The aircraft had a total of 64 people on board (60 passengers and 4 crew members).
