A $1.4B Pharma Cluster: BioPharma City to Unify Central Asian Science and Pharma

Special Project

Uzbekistan is launching one of the most ambitious medical initiatives in Central Asia. By presidential decree, the large-scale Tashkent Pharma Park innovation cluster has been officially reorganized into BioPharma City. This new status transitions it into the premier regional R&D and manufacturing hub for biotechnology. The financing scale is impressive: nearly $1.4 billion in total investment is being funneled into the project, with the majority of capital driven by global pharmaceutical giants ready to deploy next-generation laboratories.

A $1.4B Pharma Cluster: BioPharma City to Unify Central Asian Science and Pharma
Uzbekistan has announced a comprehensive expansion and restructuring of the country's primary pharmaceutical asset. The Tashkent Pharma Park innovation cluster has been officially remodeled into a regional research, development, and manufacturing hub named BioPharma City. The project spans 290 hectares, an area where 32 major investment projects are already underway.

The financial framework of this new "biotech city" relies on a strategic public-private partnership: private investors are pouring approximately $1 billion into the cluster, while state-backed infrastructure funding contributes an additional $400 million. Remarkably, foreign entities comprise more than 60% of the hub's residents, reflecting robust international corporate confidence in Uzbekistan's structural reforms.

The defining characteristic of BioPharma City is the establishment of an end-to-end ecosystem. Rather than just hosting manufacturing plants, a single site will merge comprehensive research institutes, academic centers, logistical nodes, and regulatory authorities, enabling the development of innovative drugs entirely from scratch.

Why is this project being recognized as one of the most promising biopharmaceutical hubs in the region? You will learn more about this in our upcoming interview with Abdulla Azizov, Director of the Agency for the Development of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Sector.
