On May 1, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Khorezm region to review local development and presented ambitious plans for the modernization of Urgench International Airport. The key partner in the project will be South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corporation — one of the global leaders in aviation services.

Following a two-stage tender, the South Korean company that manages one of the world’s largest airports — Incheon — was selected as the winner. Urgench Airport will now be managed by this corporation. The $223 million project includes construction of a new runway, passenger and cargo terminals, installation of modern safety and lighting systems, and procurement of specialized equipment. Construction is scheduled for completion by 2027.

Once upgraded, the airport’s hourly capacity will increase from 400 to 1,300 passengers. This will enable the reception of large aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A350, and enhance tourism in the region. President Mirziyoyev emphasized that the goal is to raise the number of tourists visiting Khorezm to 5 million.

Discussions also covered the expansion of international routes, training of local personnel, and the incorporation of national design elements into the new terminal’s architecture.
