AGMK Enters a New Industrial Stage

Uzbekistan

In recent years, Uzbekistan’s mining industry has undergone significant reforms. While precious and non-ferrous metals were previously produced mainly by two large enterprises, the introduction of a transparent system for granting mining licenses to investors has attracted around $10 billion in foreign investment over the past nine years. Today, 65 private companies operate in the sector.

AGMK Enters a New Industrial Stage
Production has grown steadily as a result. During the first 25 years of independence, gold output increased from 63 to 87 tons. Over the past nine years it rose further to 118.4 tons. Since 2016, silver production has grown 1.6 times, uranium 2.1 times, and copper 1.4 times. Overall output in the sector reached 270 trillion soums last year.

The industry also provides some of the highest-paid jobs in the country. Excavator operators earn up to 30 million soums per month, drilling specialists and heavy truck drivers up to 40 million, while geologists and geodesists can earn up to 70 million soums.

The development of the sector is also supported by an extensive system for training highly qualified specialists in cooperation with international partners. Universities and specialized institutes prepare about 2,500 professionals annually.

With the launch of the third copper processing plant, daily copper concentrate production at the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex will increase from 2,400 to 5,000 tons. The project will create more than 6,000 high-paying jobs.

The facility incorporates advanced mining technologies from the United States, Germany, Russia, China, and Finland. All production processes will be digitized and integrated into a unified management system based on artificial intelligence.

A new copper smelter worth $2.5 billion is also planned, which will create more than 1,000 additional jobs. Once these projects are completed, annual production at the complex is expected to reach 300,000 tons of copper cathodes.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that copper is becoming a strategic resource for energy, digital technologies, and green development, and that building an efficient value chain for copper processing will help create an industry of the future in Uzbekistan.
