Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, one of Muammar Gaddafi’s most prominent sons and a lingering symbol of Libya’s post-2011 turmoil, has been killed.

Assassination in Zintan: Gaddafi’s Son Killed
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, 53, son of Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi, was killed after gunmen attacked his home in the city of Zintan. His death was confirmed by his lawyer Khaled al-Zaidi and political adviser Abdullah Othman.

According to a statement released by Gaddafi’s political team, four masked, armed men stormed the house, disabled surveillance cameras and shot him dead. The statement said Saif al-Islam attempted to resist the attackers.

Former head of Libya’s High State Council, Khaled al-Mishri, called for an urgent and transparent investigation into the killing, warning of its implications for the country’s fragile political situation.

Although Saif al-Islam never held an official government post, he was widely regarded as his father’s closest political ally and de facto successor from the early 2000s until Muammar Gaddafi was killed by opposition forces in 2011.

The Gaddafi family has suffered heavy losses since the fall of the regime. Mutassim Gaddafi was killed alongside his father in 2011, while another son died in a NATO airstrike the same year along with three of Gaddafi’s grandchildren. In 2021, Saadi Gaddafi left Libya for Turkey after being acquitted of charges, citing security concerns. Hannibal Gaddafi remains imprisoned in Lebanon.
