Turkmenistan came up with a way to put out the gas crater "Gates of Hell"

Scientists believe that the only solution to the problem is to drill a well near the crater, which will ensure that gas enters all layers.
Turkmenistan has developed a project to extinguish a fire in the Darvaza gas crater, commonly known as the "Gates of Hell". The project is under approval. This was reported by TASS with reference to the head of the laboratory of the Research Institute of Natural Gas of the state concern "Turkmengas" Irina Luryeva.
“We have drawn up a project, the main essence of which is to limit the flow of gas to this emergency well. Now it is at the stage of practical implementation. Work has not yet begun, but before they begin, it is necessary to carry out a theoretical study, draw up a project. This project has already been drawn up, it is at the stage of approval,” Luryeva said.
She explained that the field has a complex geological structure: it has very thin layers, and most of them lie at a depth of up to a thousand meters from the surface. Scientists believe that the only solution to the problem is to drill a well near the crater, which ensures that the gas reaches all layers.
It arose in 1971, when Soviet geologists discovered an accumulation of underground gas in this place. The installed gas platform fell into the void, forming a deep crater. It was decided to set it on fire here in order to prevent the emission of gases harmful to people and livestock. Geologists thought that the fire would go out in a few days, but they were wrong. The gas rising from the crater has been burning day and night for 50 years.
In 2004, the Darvaza village was relocated due to the harmful effects of gas on the environment.
