Customs officers uncovered cigarettes worth 7.5 billion UZS hidden among stone slabs
Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan’s customs authorities have uncovered a major violation as part of their fight against illegal trade. During joint operations conducted by the State Customs Committee, the State Security Service, and the Bukhara Regional Customs Department, an attempt to smuggle more than 155,000 packs of tobacco products was prevented.
At one of Tashkent’s customs warehouses, railway wagons arriving under the name of a business entity and under operational surveillance were inspected. According to shipping documents, the wagons were supposed to contain travertine slabs. However, a thorough customs inspection revealed specially hidden compartments between the slabs.
During the inspection, 51 foil-wrapped cardboard boxes were discovered. When opened in the presence of witnesses, the boxes contained 76,500 packs of tobacco products.
A similar case was recorded at the "Khojadavlat" railway border customs post in Bukhara region. Customs officers inspected another wagon registered under the same business entity. This wagon also contained 91 hidden cardboard boxes among travertine slabs.
Inside these boxes, 79,090 packs of cigarettes were found, all lacking Uzbekistan's excise stamps and customs clearance documents.
As a result of the operations, a total of 155,590 packs of tobacco products were seized. Preliminary calculations estimate the total value of these illicit goods to exceed 7.5 billion UZS.
Additionally, the cargo owners attempted to evade 2.2 billion UZS in customs duties due to the state budget.
Currently, the customs authorities have initiated a criminal case regarding these violations.
