In the state capital, Porto Alegre, and the metropolitan region, the situation is critical, the channel notes. On Sunday morning, the level of the Guaíba River reached 5.33 meters, which, according to authorities, is the highest level ever recorded in history.

Heavy rains began in southern Brazil earlier in the week. The president of the country, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, visited the region.
