Ecuador's leader Daniel Noboa has declared a regime of "internal armed conflict" in the state amid an escalating security situation.

"I signed a presidential decree introducing a regime of internal armed conflict," he wrote on social network X.

The document, signed by the head of the state, orders to "mobilize the armed forces and the national police on the country’s territory to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity from organized transnational crime, terrorist organizations and belligerent non-state actors."

On the morning of 9 January, armed men took hostage employees of TC Televisión who were broadcasting live from a studio in the city of Guayaquil.

The security situation in Ecuador deteriorated on 7 January after the escape from prison of the leader of the Los Choneros criminal group, nicknamed Fito. This was followed by riots in several penitentiaries. On 8 January, Noboa declared a state of emergency in the country.
