The U.S. has unveiled its largest sanctions package against Iran since 2018, targeting over 100 individuals, entities, and vessels involved in Iranian oil exports. In response, Tehran demanded compensation for U.S. military strikes on its nuclear sites and harshly criticized Washington’s diplomatic credibility.

On July 30, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against more than 50 Iranian individuals and entities, along with over 50 vessels linked to oil exports. Simultaneously, the State Department imposed restrictions on 20 foreign companies, including those from China, India, the UAE, and Turkey.

“This is the most comprehensive sanctions package against Iran since 2018. Our goal is to target the regime’s elite profiting from illicit oil sales,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The pressure comes amid renewed tensions and threats from President Donald Trump to strike Iranian nuclear sites. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the Financial Times that Tehran demands compensation and clarification: “The U.S. must explain why it attacked during negotiations and guarantee it won’t happen again.”

Araghchi noted that trust in U.S. diplomacy is eroding in Tehran. He also dismissed ongoing talks with Europe: “If they trigger the snapback mechanism, it’s the end for them.”

Earlier, Axios reported that the U.S., UK, Germany, and France had set the end of August 2025 as a final deadline to reach a nuclear agreement with Iran. Failure to do so would prompt the reactivation of UN Security Council sanctions.
