Talks on Ukraine in London have been postponed indefinitely. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled his trip to London. The State Department cited "logistical issues in his schedule" as the reason for Rubio’s absence. However, according to Reuters, a European official said that the Secretary of State is concerned that Ukraine may return to its previous hardline stance during the negotiations.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had refused to recognize Crimea as Russian "de jure," which had been proposed by Washington as part of its peace initiatives.
U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff will also not attend the talks, which were scheduled to take place in London on April 23. Witkoff had previously met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in person.
“The cancellation of visits by Rubio and Witkoff significantly reduces the importance of the meeting, which some European officials had viewed as proof that they finally had a seat at the negotiating table,” wrote Financial Times.
On April 23, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine would require territorial concessions from both sides: “Either Moscow and Kyiv accept the White House proposal, or the United States will withdraw from the peace process.”
