Euroclear Braces for Legal Defense

Euroclear stated it has been prepared since 2022 to defend its interests in Russian courts in cases initiated by investors from Russia. The company emphasized, however, that these proceedings are unrelated to the dispute involving the Bank of Russia and the EU’s plans for Russian frozen assets.
Euroclear has confirmed its readiness to protect its interests in Russian jurisdictions in legal disputes initiated by Russian investors. The company’s press service stressed that these cases are separate from the Bank of Russia’s position on the European Commission’s initiative to use revenues from frozen Russian reserves.
Earlier, the Bank of Russia called the EU’s proposal to direct proceeds from frozen Russian assets toward supporting Ukraine illegal and contrary to international law. The regulator warned that Russia reserves the right to invoke all available legal tools to defend its interests.
Debates within the EU continue, including discussions on a large loan for Kyiv, to be backed by future compensation Ukraine may receive from Russia. A significant share of the frozen Russian funds — about €180 billion — is held in Euroclear accounts.
Moscow has already announced that it is preparing a package of countermeasures should the EU move to seize these assets. The Russian Foreign Ministry has described EU plans as an attempt to legitimize the appropriation of Russian property.
