During joint military exercises between the US and South Korea, eight air bombs were accidentally dropped on a civilian area. As a result, 15 people were injured, two of whom are in critical condition.
During military drills in South Korea, K-16 fighter pilots mistakenly dropped MK-82 bombs on a residential area in Pocheon. According to a South Korean Air Force representative on Thursday, March 6, eight general-purpose bombs were “abnormally dropped from an Air Force aircraft” and landed outside the designated training shooting zone.
Initially, it was reported that the bombs were dropped from a single fighter jet. However, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency later clarified that the bombing was carried out by two fighter jets.
As a result of the incident, 15 people were injured. Ten of them were hospitalized, and two were reported to be in serious condition. Additionally, several buildings, including a temple, as well as a truck, were damaged.
The incident occurred during joint military drills between the US and South Korea near the North Korean border. According to the South Korean Air Force, a pilot preparing for a training flight entered incorrect coordinates, which led to the erroneous bomb drop.
The South Korean Air Force expressed “deep regret over the accidental bomb drop,” wished the injured a speedy recovery, and promised to take “all necessary measures, including damage compensation.” A special committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
