Finland intends to extend the deadline for closing the border with Russia
According to the head of the country's Interior Ministry Mari Rantanen, the Finnish government plans to extend the closure of the border with Russia.

Since the beginning of November last year, Finland began to impose restrictions on entry from Russia. This decision was explained by the "uncontrolled flow of refugees from third countries". The border was completely closed on 15 December 2023, and the restrictions imposed will remain in force until 14 January. The only transport connection between the two countries along the land border will remain railway freight traffic through the Vainikkala border crossing point.

According to Finnish publications, the government may be referring to certain intelligence indicating that Russia is expected to allow a large number of asylum seekers to cross the border once the border crossing points are opened.
