Gaza Opens the Road Home: Residents Return North After Breakthrough in Negotiations
World
Tens of thousands of Palestinians began returning to northern Gaza after Israel opened roadblocks as part of a ceasefire agreement. This became possible after Hamas agreed to release Israeli hostages.
Israel lifted travel restrictions on Monday morning. The first residents reached Gaza City shortly after the crossing points opened. Around 650,000 Palestinians, displaced by the 15-month military operation, can now return to their destroyed territories.
Hamas agreed to release Israeli citizen Arbel Yehud and two other hostages. In return, Israel allowed movement through the main roads, warning that any attempts to transport weapons would be considered a violation of the agreement.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 47,000 people were killed during the military campaign. The ceasefire agreement, brokered by Qatar and Egypt, gave thousands of families a chance to return to normal life.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed his commitment to ensuring the return of all hostages and emphasized that any violations of the ceasefire will not be tolerated.
