Germany abolishes the possibility of obtaining citizenship within three years
World
During coalition talks between the conservative XDI/XSI bloc and the Social Democratic Party, an agreement was reached to abolish the possibility of acquiring German citizenship within three years. This was reported by Die Zeit.
The coalition also decided to maintain the possibility of obtaining a German passport within five years. This decision, which simplifies the process of acquiring citizenship in Germany, has sparked extensive discussions among the public and political parties.
According to Deutsche Welle, the new coalition plans to strengthen migration laws. In particular, it is proposed to actively deport illegal migrants, maintain enhanced border control, and expand the list of countries whose citizens are not allowed to apply for asylum.
In January 2024, the German parliament made amendments to the citizenship law aimed at simplifying the process of acquiring citizenship.
Now, individuals who have lived in Germany for five years will be eligible for citizenship. Additionally, individuals who demonstrate "special integration achievements" will be eligible for citizenship within three years. Such achievements include knowledge of the language at the C1 level and active participation in public life (such as participation in various associations). Applicants must also be financially independent and able to support themselves and their family members.
The amendments to the citizenship law came into effect on June 1, 2024.
Furthermore, new approaches to the requirements for individuals applying for German citizenship will be introduced, creating more favorable opportunities for many migrants.
