Google and Amazon are making staff cuts
On January 10, Google announced it was laying off "several hundred" employees and reorganising several departments, without providing specific information on the number of people being laid off. The company is laying off staff in its main engineering department, as well as in departments focused on its Voice Assistant and device development, such as its Pixel smartphones, Nest smart home automation devices, and Fitbit fitness bracelets. In addition to this, most of the employees in the augmented reality development division will also be laid off.

The company did not disclose the exact number of employees laid off in each division or what specific changes will be made in the reorganisation. The general reason for the layoffs relates to a desire to reduce costs, improve efficiency and focus on core products.

Also on the same day, another US technology company, Amazon, announced it would be laying off hundreds of employees. Amazon will lay off employees from the streaming services Twitch and Prime Video, as well as from the film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which Amazon acquired in 2021. At Twitch alone, 500 employees will be laid off, representing 35 per cent of the total workforce.

The cuts are related to the company's intention to "reduce or discontinue investments in certain areas" and focus on products that generate the most revenue.
