Guterres addressed the UN Security Council on the issue of the Gaza Strip
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has used his powers under the UN Charter for the first time in his career to send a letter to the Security Council to avert a humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by Anadolu.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General, described the Secretary-General's remarks at the daily press conference. He said that in the letter, Secretary-General Guterres referred to Article 99 of the UN Charter and noted that "more than eight weeks of hostilities in Gaza and Israel have created appalling human suffering."

In his letter, Guterres recalled that the civilian population in Gaza is in grave danger due to the Israeli military attack, that there is no safe place to protect civilians, and that the health system has been destroyed.

Noting that the current situation in Gaza has made it impossible to carry out important humanitarian operations, Guterres added that Gaza is under constant bombardment by Israeli forces.

The Secretary-General emphasised that the international community must use its influence to prevent further escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip and put an end to the crisis.

"I urge the members of the Security Council to press to avert a humanitarian catastrophe. I reiterate my appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire to be declared. This is urgent," the UN Secretary General said.
