In Istanbul, the number of Uzbek deaths from counterfeit alcohol is increasing
The Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Istanbul reported that as of January 30, 2025, the number of Uzbeks who had been poisoned with counterfeit alcohol reached 23 people, including two women. All the bodies have been brought home.

In mid-January, Turkish media reported that about 90 people were admitted to Istanbul hospitals with symptoms of methanol poisoning. Most of the cases were recorded in the regions where people from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan live. Some of the victims survived: some patients have already been discharged from hospitals, others continue treatment.

As part of the investigation, 15 people were detained, four of them were arrested on charges of "attempted murder." The Turkish authorities closed and banned more than 60 establishments selling counterfeit alcohol.

Law enforcement agencies urge citizens to refrain from buying alcoholic beverages in dubious places and be attentive to the quality of the products.
