In Karakalpakstan, 182 billion sums will be allocated for projects based on citizens' initiatives

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting on 10 January to analyse the work done and define further tasks for socio-economic development of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The meeting reviewed the work done in 2023 and discussed tasks for 2024.

It is noted that today the population of Karakalpakstan has exceeded 2 million people. Every year 50 thousand citizens enter the labour market. The head of state drew attention to the need to train them in modern professions, provide them with jobs and decent conditions.

For this purpose, a large-scale work is planned this year. In particular, it is planned to increase the volume of industrial production to 23 trillion sums, as well as to create production capacities worth 2 trillion sums. In the textile, electrical engineering, pharmaceuticals and construction materials sectors, 24 major projects worth 5 trillion sums will be launched.

In 2024, it is planned to attract 2 billion 100 million dollars of foreign investments to the region. Due to this, 206 projects in industry, 240 in services, 34 in agriculture will be realised, and about 13 thousand high-income jobs will be created. It is also planned to increase the volume of exports up to 160 million dollars this year due to effective utilisation of available opportunities.

A foreign grant will be attracted to increase yields in agriculture. Water-saving technologies will be introduced on 6 thousand hectares of land, and 31 thousand hectares will be levelled with lasers. Measures are planned to repair the infrastructure of mahallas and houses of the population. 2.3 billion sums will be allocated for the treatment of those in need of high-tech medical services.

At the same time, 182 billion sums will be allocated for projects based on citizens' initiatives, as well as 40 billion sums from the local budget this year. 10 trillion sums will be allocated for projects under programmes to support small and medium-sized businesses.

Moreover, the head of state set a task to develop a programme for the development of tourism in Karakalpakstan, especially ecological, ethnographic, pilgrimage directions, to organise a tourism cluster and attract foreign experts to the sphere. He pointed out the need to develop Nukus airport and increase air traffic, build new hotels, modernise museums, expand roadside services.
