Iran’s New Supreme Leader: Injury Rumors Denied
World
Mojtaba Khamenei, officially elected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader on March 8, has been at the center of rumors claiming he was injured in the leg on the first day of the war, February 28, The New York Times reported, citing Israeli sources. Iranian contacts confirmed the injury but did not specify the time or circumstances.
Israeli and U.S. sources noted that Khamenei has not appeared publicly since his election, fueling the speculation. A leading Iranian state broadcaster referred to him as a “wounded veteran” of the ongoing war with the U.S. and Israel.
However, Youssef Pezeshkian, son of Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian and a member of his administration, stated via his Telegram channel that the new Supreme Leader is safe. This statement was confirmed by The Times of Israel.
Previously, Mojtaba Khamenei had been identified by NYT sources as a primary candidate for the Supreme Leader position even before the official announcement. His election followed the process initiated after the death of the former religious leader of the Islamic Republic.
Thus, despite the reports of an injury, official sources confirm that Iran’s new Supreme Leader is safe and ready to fulfill his duties.
