According to the Irish Times, the Irish government plans to formally recognize the state of Palestine this Wednesday. The source says two other European Union countries, whose names have not yet been disclosed, may make similar decisions.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Simon Harris stated that Ireland would recognize the Palestinian state by the end of the month, while emphasizing that he had no intention of severing diplomatic relations with Israel, despite the potentially controversial nature of the move.
The state of Palestine is currently recognized by nine EU member states. Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia took this step in 1988, even before joining the EU, while Sweden recognized the state of Palestine in 2014. As of May 2024, Palestine is recognized as a sovereign state by 143 of the 193 UN member states.
