Japan Makes History: Sanae Takaichi Set to Become First Female Prime Minister
Sanae Takaichi, 64, former Minister of Internal Affairs, won the election for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership, Kyodo reported. Her victory paves the way for her to become Japan’s first female prime minister in history.

Five candidates competed for the LDP leadership. Takaichi’s main rival was Shinjiro Koizumi, 44, the Minister of Agriculture and son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who led Japan from 2001 to 2006.

Since the LDP holds a majority in parliament, Takaichi’s appointment as prime minister is considered all but certain.

She will replace Shigeru Ishiba, who announced his early resignation in early September.

If confirmed by parliament, Sanae Takaichi will become Japan’s first female prime minister, marking a historic moment in a political landscape long dominated by men.
