Kashmir tragedy: 60 dead, 200 missing
August 15 — At least 60 people have died, over 100 have been injured, and more than 200 remain missing after a sudden flood swept through the Kishtwar district, according to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The disaster struck the village of Chasoti during the annual pilgrimage route to the high-altitude Machail Mata temple. Torrents of water, triggered by heavy rain, washed away a field kitchen and security post where dozens of pilgrims had gathered.

“We heard a deafening noise, followed by a rush of water and mud. People screamed; some fell into the Chenab River, while others were buried under debris,” said pilgrim Rakesh Sharma.

Rescue operations involve the army, air force, and emergency services, with excavators, helicopters, ropes, and makeshift bridges being used to search for survivors.

Authorities warn of continued risks of landslides and flash floods in the region. This is the second major disaster to hit the Himalayas in just over a week, following a similar flood and landslide in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

Scientists note that while the Himalayas are naturally prone to floods and landslides, climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of such events.
