North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stated his intention to strengthen the country's nuclear potential by accusing the US, South Korea, and Japan of creating a threat to the region's security. Washington and Tokyo, in turn, confirmed the course towards the complete denuclearization of the DPRK.

Kim Jong Un announced the expansion of the nuclear program
At a ceremony commemorating the 77th anniversary of the Korean People's Army's founding, Kim Jong Un accused the US of inciting conflict in the Korean peninsula and creating a military bloc analogous to NATO. According to him, the trilateral alliance of Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo poses a "serious threat" to North Korea, which requires the active expansion of its nuclear arsenal.

Pyongyang has been actively modernizing its nuclear program for several years, despite international sanctions and stalled diplomatic negotiations. In response, the US and its allies are intensifying military exercises in the region.

After assuming office on January 20th, Donald Trump expressed his willingness to negotiate with Kim, reminding him of his meetings with him in 2018-2019. However, at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Sigeru Isibo, Trump emphasized that Washington is still striving for the complete denuclearization of North Korea.

Pyongyang has not yet commented on Trump's initiative. However, analysts believe Kim Jong Un is focused on strengthening relations with Moscow: in recent months, North Korea has sent thousands of soldiers to support the Russian army. Kim himself recently confirmed his support for Russia in a speech, stating that North Korea "always supports the just cause of the Russian army and people."

Experts do not rule out that in the event of a weakening of ties with Moscow, Kim may reconsider the possibility of resuming negotiations with the US. However, for now, Pyongyang is focused on building military potential and intensifying antagonism with the West.
